Summary
When I first picked up this novel and started reading, I wondered why it was called The Rose Legacy. The main character is an Italian bella named Carina DiGratia. I kept reading looking for the answer to my pondering. Where is Rose or a rose! Let me clue you in to something I totally read over: the opening poetry at the beginning of each chapter is attributed to Rose. Don't ignore those opening lines of poetry! They really do play into the storyline! And Rose herself does indeed show up midway through the novel. Kristen Heitzmann, the author, is a wonderfully skilled writer. She has characters with varied and complicated backgrounds that the reader becomes completely invested in¬¬ at least this reader did! Carina DiGratia, the Italian bella, enters the story from the very first pages. We find that she is fleeing her Sonoma, California home when she discovers her fiancé in the arms of her sister. To punish him, she runs away to the Colorado mining country hoping that her fiancé will come after her. The fact that wealthy Italian parents during that time in history would allow their unmarried daughter to leave home with their blessing for the Colorado mining country is a stretch. While it's a stretch, it does lead to a wonderfully complex and rich story that I found myself wanting to go on and on. There is a very strong biblical worldview woven throughout the story as the characters struggle with issues of forgiveness, acceptance, belonging, prejudices, and what love really looks like. Quillan Shepard, the male protagonist of the story is a complicated person that you will fall in love with while at the same time want to kick him in the shins! It is to Quillan that the Rose Legacy is connected. I'll warn you that you won't get the whole story in this novel, so be prepared to read the other two novels in the Diamond of the Rockies trilogy. And please, whatever you do, don't gloss over those opening lines of poetry!
