Summary
Sweetbriar is based upon the actual diaries and writings of the founders of Seattle. The main characters, the Dennys and the Borens, were real people that pioneered from Illinois to the Puget Sound area to carve out a new life. Technically, this book is considered a work of historical fiction. However, Ms. Wilbee incorporates word for word descriptions and experiences that the Dennys and Borens themselves wrote. She has included an extensive bibliography in the back of the book which lends credence to her characters and the plot. Certainly, much of the dialogue and thoughts of her characters was creative license, but with such a wealth of source material, the reader can feel confident in the accuracy of the novel's historical aspect. You will grow to adore Louisa and cheer her on as she seeks to wed her true love and make a home in the wilds of the Oregon Territory
