Summary
Overall Sisters of the Confederacy is the second book of A Secret Refuge series by Lauraine Snelling. The trials of a Kentucky family continue in this novel as the Highwood family is separated from their beloved Twin Oaks plantation and each other. Parents and eldest brother dead. Twin Oaks burnt to the ground. Three siblings in Richmond, Virginia, two of which, seek to do what they can to aid the warwounded. The eldest daughter, disguised as a man, along with some her former slaves find themselves escaping the devastation of the Civil War by heading west to Oregon in an effort to protect their thoroughbred breeding stock. Ms. Snelling's storytelling is gripping in its realism. You will love her characters who struggle with the hardships of life, and you will be able to empathize with their doubts and and responses. So far removed as we are from the events of this time period, we can easily romanticize them. Ms. Snelling doesn't dwell in gore and depressing things, but she is very evenhanded in her approach to the events of this time period. Great read. Biblical worldview.
