Summary
Reviewer Name : WendiThe novel started out with a historical story of life on the farm in the 1 800's in New Zealand. The story revolves around a family who is struggling to continue with life without their mother and wife. The father makes a trip to the city and is delayed a couple of weeks while the teenage sons and 1 2 year old daughter manage the farm. He returns with a new mother and wife who is not at all interested in farm life. She makes life rather miserable for all until her younger brother comes to visist and takes advantage of the 1 2 year old who is now 1 5 years old. It was engaging until about way through the book when the sexual encounters start happening and are described in enough detail to make you not want to know. Language is not a huge problem but the fact the young girl loses her virginity and has to lead a ruined life was enough for me not to finish the book. I was half way through when I decided the book was not at all uplifting although I understand the struggles which all coming of age young people face.
