Clearie, a one-hundred-year-old schoolhouse, is fed-up.
For so long, he has helped children get educated but been rewarded only by their complaints about how much they hate school.
He longs to get away.
His dream is to go to France, a country he has heard so much about in geography lessons over the years – but how could a schoolhouse possibly travel?
Eventually he comes up with a plan and enlists the help of two students, the Buggy twins; but not everything works out as he had hoped.
With an attic full of crazy crabs, led by the fearless Lancelot, his journey is less than enjoyable and, in his absence, the school system falls apart.
Will Clearie’s dreams come true and the children get their wish for schooldays to end forever? Or has everyone bitten off more than they can chew?

Summary
The Runaway Schoolhouse by Maria Matthews is an adorable book. I think kids will absolutely love that the schoolhouse is the main character along with twins Sara and John. Sara is your typical bright student that loves school and her brother John is one of those kids that like to play tricks on the teacher. The theme of the story is that the schoolhouse wants a break and wants to see the world. I see a message of appreciating what you have and the grass isn’t always greener. The schoolhouse also has a family of crabs living in it which adds additional humor to the story. The teachers’ reactions when the schoolhouse is missing are hilarious. I loved how the kids started trying to solve the problems and had their list of ideas they would vote on. I would definitely recommend this book for kids.
