Book Title: Poppy
Book Author: Karen Lopez
What do you like about this book:
Poppy is a romance novel; however, it is likely very different from any romance novel you have read before. Poppy is seventeen years old and homeless, though she hides it well. After being moved from state to state all her life by her drug and alcohol addicted mother, Poppy decides to lose her mother during the last part of her Junior year. It wasn’t difficult, and to her knowledge, her mother never tried to find her. She lands a job at a local cafe and there she meets Peter. They hit it off right from the start. However, when Poppy leaves the cafe for a job at the new grocery store in town, they lose contact. When she shows up at Peters apart complex several weeks later, he is delighted. She doesn’t think he will be as delighted when he learns the purpose of her visit.
This is a book that will definitely make you think and tug at your heart strings. I can’t even imagine having a childhood like Poppy’s. My heart went out to her. She does an excellent job with being creative with her resources to hid the fact she is homeless. I was quite impressed. I thought the author portrayed her personality perfectly given her upbringing, or really her lack of upbringing. Her poor self esteem and her inability to form an attachment were totally understandable. I found the section where she has depression to be particularly heart wrenching. I was glad I had the tissues close by.
This book does have some adult situations and there are a few occurrences of profanity. Sex does occur in the book, but it is not detailed or graphic. I would recommend this book to the adult reader who enjoys a romance that is a bit atypical for the genre.
