Summary
Overall Finding Mercy by Michael Landon, Jr. and Cindy Kelley is the second book in the Mercy Medallion trilogy. The first book in the series left us readers chomping at the bit for more of Mercy's story, and I'm glad to report, that the second book answered our questions. While the first book ended rather abruptly, in cliffhangerlike manner, book two leaves us with less questions at the end because most of the big plot twists are ironed out. Set once again in the postCivil War era, the novel capitalizes on the volatile emotions of the people in the North and the South to add intrigue to the plot. Another element included is how the blacks were freed from one kind of slavery, only to fall prey to another kind of slavery, the slavery of being cheated through excessive prices and interest payments. This novel is one I would allow my teens to read, and would quickly recommend. While there is mention of God, and there is an expectation for moral behavior, it is not overly didactic and sermonizing. It's a little bit mystery, a little bit romance, and a lot historical fiction. I'm already looking forward to the third installation in the series.
