From James Dashner, the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Maze Runner series, which includesThe Maze Runner—now a #1 movie worldwide—and The Scorch Trials—soon to be a major motion picture from Twentieth Century Fox that hits theaters on September 18, 2015—comes an all-new, edge-of-your seat adventure.The Eye of Minds is the first novel in the Mortality Doctrine series set in a world of hyperadvanced technology, cyberterrorists, and gaming beyond your wildest dreams . . . and your worst nightmares.
Michael is a gamer. And like most gamers, he almost spends more time on the VirtNet than in the actual world. The VirtNet offers total mind and body immersion, and the more hacking skills you have, the more fun. Why bother following the rules when most of them are dumb, anyway?
But some rules were made for a reason. Some technology is too dangerous to fool with. And one gamer has been doing exactly that, with murderous results.
The government knows that to catch a hacker, you need a hacker. And they’ve been watching Michael. If he accepts their challenge, Michael will need to go off the VirtNet grid to the back alleys and corners of the system human eyes have never seen—and there’s the possibility that the line between game and reality will be blurred forever.

Book Title: The Eye of Minds
Book Author: James Dashner
What do you like about this book:
Summery::
It is difficult to write a novel for teenagers, having to compete with other sources of entertainment, such as video games. However, instead of rivaling it, this novel joins it. Combining high-tech virtual reality with an action-packed storyline, legendary author James Dashner delivers and entertaining--maybe even a bit addicting--novel for teens. It's not as good as The Maze Runner Series (but, after all, there isn't many that are), but it still holds a certain charm and will appeal to youth audiences, despite its occasional silliness.
Sexual Content::
Someone talks about sneaking into a bare, presumably a strip club. A few mild comments are made about the human anatomy--mostly male, but one or two about the female.
Violent Content::
Heavy and dark. In the VirtNet, it is typical for players to commit suicide to leave the game. One starts digging into her forehead with her fingers to remove a chip, making her suicide real, and twice as gruesome. Flashbacks feature horrifying situations--a kid being shoved off a cliff, a hospital full of wounded being burned to the ground.
Odd, shadowy creatures pursue them, and, though they never kill their victims, they do beat them and eventually bite them, which sends the bitee into a sort of brain-dead state. The only way to kill these monsters is by squishing their eyes. And, yes, it's as grows as it sounds. Coming out in a disgusting slime, their hands are practically seared. Many more fights--some with blood, others, not so much.
Going into a war game, the reader sees a lot. Everything from the severed head on its game cover to the brutal stabbings and shootings, this scene does not shy from blood and gore. It features a female soldier being beaten to death, along with many, many other violent deaths. I guess you could say the body count was high, seeing how each person died over twenty times.
A brief reference is made to domestic abuse.
Language::
A few uses of "d--n." Frequent uses of teen slurs, such as "sucks," "screw up," freaking," etc.
Drug/Alcohol Content::
Teenagers sneak into a bar, but don't drink anything. However, jokes are made about it.
Cleanness Rating:: 3/5
Rating:: PG-13 - For intense sci-fi action violence, some thematic material, and disturbing descriptions
