Summary
Overall Over the Edge Death in the Grand Canyon by Michael P. Ghiglieri and Thomas M. Myers 2001 This is a very long book but if you like details and stories...it's good. The chapters are split into various categories and so you can divide the book up into \"bite sized reading segments\". Everything from plane crashes to falls to drowning in the Colorado River describes the over 500 deathes that have ocurred in and around the Grand Canyon. The stories start back in the early days of exploring the canyon and continue through recent years. There is a lot of history and a lot of personal intrigue, how and why did these accidents occur? In some cases we will never know as there were no witnesses, in other cases, it simply happened and there is no satisfactory reason why a life ended. Stupidy, Naivete, carelessness, over confidence, etc..., the list of causes is a long one that all resulted in tragedy. If you've ever hiked or run the river in the canyon you may think twice about going back, or at least, maybe you might be a bit more careful. I, for one, was glad I read it \"after\" I visited the canyon. In an erie coincidence, my family visited the canyon several times over 12 months prior to me reading the book and we witnessed someone climbing into one of the areas mentioned in the book as a site where a fatal fall occurred. It didn't look safe when we saw it and it was really creepy when we read about it. There is a lot of history and a lot of interesting stories in the book. I enjoyed it and yes, I will go back to the Grand Canyon and I will hike, it is too beautiful and amazing to not go back.
Violence Some of the stories are tragic and disturbing too.
