Sixteen-year-old Riley Williams has been able to see ghosts since the car crash that took her mother’s life and shattered her family. Guilt-ridden over the belief that she’s somehow responsible for her mom’s death, Riley is desperate to see her mother’s elusive spirit to gain her forgiveness. When her father moves the family to Scotland so they can all start over, Riley believes her life couldn’t get worse–that is until the ghost of nineteen-year-old Ian MacKinnon catches her purposely cutting herself. An uneasy truce quickly turns into friendship, and soon Riley’s falling hard for Ian. Riley believes her gift could help Ian end the curse that has kept him tied to the land for centuries, but that would mean letting him go forever and she’s not sure she is strong enough to do that. As if her life wasn’t complicated enough, the malevolent spirit of the woman who killed Ian returns and she’ll stop at nothing to keep Riley from helping Ian find eternal peace.

Summary
Overall I enjoyed the book and wanted to know what was going to happen next. The friendship of Riley and Ian was sweet. She felt she could tell him anything. Everyone needs that person they can be real with. I don't read many ghost stories and I was surprised that as a ghost he could touch and be touched. I was glad to see the relationship between Riley and Shane start to repair. The house keeper may have been your typical Aunt Bea and it worked for me. I started the second book as soon as I finished this one. What bothered me: The cutting was a little disturbing to me. I would not want a teen to read it and want to try it. The drug and alcohol use seemed just a normal part of life. I hope that is not true for teens. The book also reminded me of how mean kids can be to each other. Bottom line as an adult I enjoyed the book and plan to finish the series. Not sure I would recommend it for a young teen.
Violence Riley cuts herself. violence from the ghost, violence from the past regarding how Laria and Ian died, if you are claustrophobic; being stuck in the Mausoleum.
Language profane language throughout the book from the teens
Sexual Talk of teenage sex, and lustful feelings
Drug & Alcohol Lots of drinking and drug use by teens. Discussed as normal life.
