Summary
Review by jackiec711. Overall In 1912, 19 year old Christy Huddleston, hears a talk given by Dr. MacNeil about the needs in the Smocky Mountains for a school. She makes arrangements to be a teacher there at her young age. The experiences she has, helps her grow up in a hurry. She sees how superstitions keep the mountain people stuck in behaviors that are self destructive as well as their love for the mountains, its diverse plants that they use for remidies, and how tough they are. She falls in love with the young minister, but finds in the end that she really loves the single doctor. I really loved the book because it was so real, the characters so fully developed, not corny. Christy is a rugged young woman who adapts, learns and grows in her faith and comes to love the people she has come to serve. I loved the book and can't wait to read Julia, also by Catherine Marshall.
