Animal photographer Janet Macphail is old enough to know what she wants out of life: her beloved Australian Shepherd Jay, her cat Leo, her boyfriend Tom, and beer and pizza at the end of a long day. In roughly that order.
Then one of her photography students is murdered near the grounds of a mysterious quasi-religious compound that seems to be coming up in conversation way too often lately. In conversations about exotic birds, unusual amounts of money, and veiled threats, in fact.
Janet can’t keep from getting involved in the investigation, especially since there seems to be much more at stake than one life. And while she might usually know what she wants, she’s beginning to wonder just how far Tom wants to take their relationship, and how far she wants to go along with him.
It’s all a bit confusing… and maybe dangerous, too.
This series (this is book two) is absolutely perfect for dog lovers — there are extensive descriptions of dog training, dog crate set ups and dog treats. Janet is a smart, brave heroine with realistic faults and a wonderful group of supporting characters in her friends and family.
Sheila Boneham is the author of Rescue Matters! How to Find, Foster, and Rehome Companion Animals, as well as a number of other books about animals. Her expertise definitely comes through in this novel.
