In this modern-day Book of Job story, God and Satan quarrel in heaven over Gretchen, a faithful servant, who is on her way to college. God allows Satan to take away her scholarship and her family, which results in emotional devastation. Looking for an escape, she meets a man who becomes her boyfriend, gets pregnant, and through the misguided advice of a counselor, decides on abortion. The pain of abortion is then seen from every possible viewpoint, thus exposing, “My body, my choice” as a selfish and evil lie.

Summary
Gretchen is leaving her home in Alaska to attend college in Oregon. She is excited to be fulfilling her dream of attending a Christian college and has high hopes of joining the Worship team. Not long after her arrival, the unthinkable happens. She suffers tremendous personal loss and pain. She becomes deeply depressed and seeks comfort from Blake, a man she recently met. She turns her back on God and her Christian friends. When she learns she’s pregnant, it is more than she can handle. Going against everything she once believed in and against the wishes of Blake, she takes the advice of her secular therapist and has an abortion. She thought getting rid of the “problem” would fix everything. Instead, it made it much worse.
This is an abortion story, but it is so much more. It is an outstanding book. I wish it were mandatory reading for all high school girls! The book actually follows several characters besides Gretchen. The author does a good job of bringing in all the background and showing the far reaching effects of abortion. The point of view changes a lot and thus makes it a bit hard to keep up with the story in places. Some of the scenes are absolutely heartbreaking, but they are so important for women to read and understand. I cried several times throughout this book, but I am so glad I read it. I highly recommend it for all women of reproductive age and older.
