Angie and Mel have finally achieved their dream of owning a cupcake bakery, thanks to their silent partner Tate. The three have been friends since childhood, so of course the bakers want to do their best to create the perfect cupcakes for Tate’s wedding to a local fashion designer. She’s the quintessential bridezilla, unfortunately, so they’re struggling to keep their mouths shut and concentrate on how great this society wedding will be for business, especially with all the bride’s fashion-world contacts clamoring to feature the whole thing in their magazine.
They’re worried about Tate, they’re worried about the unusually demanding contract they’ve been given by his fiancee, and they’re worried that they’ll be losing a friend instead of gaining one after the wedding. Still, things are going well with the business, the cupcakes are scrumptious, and they figure they’ll just be supportive of Tate and everything will turn out fine.
It doesn’t quite work out that way. In fact, when Mel finds the bride-to-be dead before the wedding, with a chocolate ganache cupcake clutched in her hand, it looks as though it might be curtains for the bakery… and for Mel. Who’s putting up posters saying she’s a prime suspect? Where did the arsenic in the cupcake come from? And just who has won Mel’s heart — her rich and handsome business partner, or the dishy DA?
The characters are fun, the story is well put together, and there are recipes. In fact, check out the Mojito Cupcake from p. 220 below — a rich golden cake delicately flavored with lime and mint.
