Description

Review: The Bachelor's Spy by Pepper Basham
The Bachelor’s Spy was another fabulous addition to Pepper Basham’s Freddie and Grace Mystery series. I finally binge-read (and binge-listened to!) the entire series so I could get to this book, and it was absolutely worth it.
The moment I finished, I immediately emailed one of my reviewer friends to tell her how much I loved it. Looking back, I’m not sure why I waited so long to start this series. I think I was intimidated by the idea of catching up on five books. Now I have the opposite problem—I’m sad that I’m completely caught up and have to wait for the next adventure!
As soon as I learned Blake was finally getting his own story, I was thrilled. Honestly... what took so long? 😊 Blake has been one of the most intriguing characters throughout the series, and I couldn't wait to learn more about the mysterious spy who had captured my attention from the very beginning.
One of Pepper Basham’s greatest strengths is her ability to balance mystery and character development so beautifully. She creates mysteries that completely pull you in, leaving you eager to solve them alongside the characters. At the same time, she gives readers enough everyday moments, humor, and genuine relationships that you become completely invested in the characters themselves. By this point in the series, they feel like old friends—and I would happily spend an afternoon with every one of them.
Without giving anything away, I'll simply say this: if you're like me and always want to know whether a story has a satisfying, happy ending before diving in... rest assured, it does.
There was one part of the story that caught me completely off guard. When I realized Freddie's storyline would involve the war, I almost didn't want to keep reading because I was so worried about where the story was headed. That emotional investment is a testament to just how much I've come to love these characters.
My only disappointment? Detective Miracle didn't make an appearance! I kept hoping he would show up somewhere along the way.
Pepper Basham has created such a rich cast of characters and such an engaging world that I sincerely hope this isn't the end of the Freddie and Grace series. There are still so many adventures waiting for them, and I'll be first in line for the next one.
If you enjoy historical mysteries, lovable characters, witty banter, faith-filled stories, and romances that continue to grow stronger with each book, I can't recommend this series highly enough. It has become one of my all-time favorites.
