Summary
\"Never have regrets!\" Those are great pearls of wisdom, and it is hard to apply those words to life when horrific things continue to bombard a person's life. It is hard at any age to be able to \"eat the elephant one bite at a time,\" but for a teenager, it is almost impossible to acheive. This novel tells the story of one such teen who must face things most adults would have issues in dealing with. Layken has went through so much for a girl her age, eighteen and a senior in high school. She recently lost her father, and her mother has decided to move her and her brother, Kel, from the lower half of the United States, Texas, to the upper half of it, Michigan. Layken, or more commonly known as Lake, finds herself completely and helplessly in love with a man that most would consider unattainable for a young woman of her position. Not only does Lake have this issue to deal with, she has other life changing issues thrown at her as if she is on a spinning carnival knife wheel. This novel, the first of a series, is a love story. A sweet love story of an older teenaged girl and her reluctant beloved. Morals in this story are to face the obstacles that are in your way and tackle them piece by piece devouring the problem a bite at a time, live life in a way that you never have any regrets, and love those who love you most even when loving them seems impossible. It also teaches that sometimes life places you in a situation, or moves you clear across the land, to put you exactly were you need to be and in the arms of those who can and will love you through all of your trials. The plot is extremely believable, and it is entirely sad in places and causes readers to climb on the emotional roller coaster that Lake has been forced to ride. It deals with actions, reactions, and results of these actions and reactions by Lake and her love, Will. It causes readers to take a look deep within the soul to make sure that they are doing exactly what they should in order to make their life the best it can possibly be even when life decides to hate them. It challenges readers to evaluate the life they have been given just like how Lake is constantly evaluating what her life, anyones life, is all about. I would have to say my favorite character would be Eddie, Lake's best friend, who is in the foster care system. To have been through what this teen has been through and to still keep her smile is something to be admired and exhalted. She is a like a refreshing cool breeze when life heats up to an unbearable degree. She is the epitome of strength and endurance of what it means to overcome life's strongest difficulties. She knows exactly what it means to be a friend, and she models the ideals of friendship perfectly in this novel. I would definitely recommend this book to an older teen around the age of junior/senior in high school. There is a second novel, Point of Return that is a continuation of this novel, and it is a must read on my list. This is definitely worth reading, and I highly and without reservation recommend this novel.
Violence-There is one point in the novel where a boy forces himself upon Lake. It is important to the outcome of the novel, but it is the only part of the novel where violence is exhibited.
Language- There are a few minor curse words in the novel. It is nothing to cause worry or prevent anyone from reading this novel.
Sexual - Romantic kissing does occur between Lake and Will, but no sex occurs.
Drug & Alcohol-If there is an alcohol or drug scene in this novel, I cannot remember it.
