“Brill Jessup just became the first female police chief in Sophie Trace, Tennessee, and is riding on the credentials of a stellar eighteen-year career on the Memphis police force…Before she even has time to unpack her boxes, people start disappearing. Lots of them. To complicate matters, a local legend has many residents believing that the cause is unearthly–tied to red “shadows”, or spirits of the departed Cherokee who once inhabited the land…”–p.[4] of cover.

Summary
Overall The Real Enemy by Kathy Herman is part family drama and part mystery. In the opening scenes you realize that Brill and Kurt are dealing with marital issues of the very emotional kind. They are determined to stay together for their daughter, Emily’s sake. They have recently moved to Sophie Trace and Brill is chief of police. While dealing with all of these emotions, Brill is also trying to find out why her residents are disappearing without a trace. I was as emotionally wrapped up in how Brill and Kurt would resolve their issues as I was who was kidnapping the residents of Sophie Trace. The author did an amazing job of communicating both POV’s in the marriage
with realism. This is my first book by Kathy Herman but I am clearing out room on my book shelf for more of her books.
