Summary
Overall When the beautiful merchant's daughter, Annabel Chapman avails herself as an indentured servant to Lord Ranulf le Wyse on behalf of her family's debt, she is attempting escape the unwanted advances of the surly Tom atte Watter, the lord's bailiff. Upon reaching the lord's manor, she discovers that the bailiff is still determined to stalk her in an attempt force himself upon her, only she is rescued on more than one occasion by her handsome, but ill-tempered employer. Ranulf le Wyse finds himself enchanted by his new employee and in spite of his tortured past continues to seek her company; finding her kind, compassionate, loyal and highly educated. During their evening Bible readings, Ranulf discovers that Annabel's deepest desire is to enter a convent and serve her God for the rest of her days. When an unfortunate accident puts Annabel's life in danger, Ranulf has a decision to make; one that may fulfill her dream, but would separate him from Annabel forever.
