What do you like about this book:
As a reporter, I'm sure Creston Mapes experienced the horrors of the domestic world first hand. These aspects shine through in his novel Fear Has a Name. With disturbingly realistic situations and sexual tension throughout, you will walk away from this novel not knowing what to think. Its redemptive message felt forced, as if Mapes finished the novel then, as an afterthought, realized he needed to squeeze a biblical message somewhere into the story. When it comes to a light, wholesome book, I suggest you bypass Fear Has a Name.
Sexual Content: Near the beginning, a man is falsely accused of downloading child pornography into his laptop. Thankfully, this subplot does not last long. Gang members approach a girl. Although never acted upon, their intention are evident. A man is openly rebuked before the church for carrying on an affair, while another is believed to be having an affair. And even though she has feelings for him, he never dishonors his marriage. Despite Granger denying any sexual motive behind his stocking Jack's wife, sexual tension riddles the story as Pam is constantly fears being raped. Jack and his wife have a brief forward in their kitchen and discuss sleeping together. The story returns to the part afterward, only vaguely implying that they had sex—nothing is described. Heading to a cabin, a man mildly mentions his many love escapades with his wife there, thinking that one of his children might have been conceived there. He battles temptation when he spends some time at a woman's summer home and she insists upon staying with him. Nothing happens between them despite her advances. Granger would obviously give anything if Jack never existed and he was married to Pam.
Violent Content: Relatively bloodless punchfights fill the story. However, this book did not get a 3/5 for its blood. Multiple people are tempted to commit suicide. Granger's family mentally abused him, making him feel worthless, refusing to show any love for him. A gang fight breaks out at a high school. A man is supposed to have killed a handicapped woman in cold blood. Kidnappings and murders are also present. Two car wrecks leave drivers bleeding and unconscious.
Language: It is eveident that Mapes has no desire to use profanity in his novel, replacing them with "Christian" slurs.
Drug/Alcohol: Jack believes that a burglar is high on drugs when he breaks into a house. Many chapters feature Granger smoking a cigarette.
