Falling into Us by Denise Hunter is a sweet, clean romance that balances a tender love story with some surprisingly emotional themes.
After the death of her mother, Gabby is given one final task: personally deliver a letter to the grandmother she has never known. Unfortunately, finding her estranged grandmother proves much more difficult than expected when Gabby discovers she has moved from her last known address.
Enter Mason, Gabby’s Airbnb host and a local newspaper reporter who offers to help with the search. On a side note, I really enjoyed the positive portrayal of journalism in this story. That's not normally an occupation I gravitate toward in books, so Mason may have won me over a little. 😊
Mason is also a widower raising his twelve-year-old daughter, and I loved watching Gabby develop a relationship with her. Mason’s extended family and their farm added another layer of warmth to the story and created the kind of family atmosphere I always enjoy.
I also loved that Gabby is a jewelry designer. It was an interesting and creative career choice that gave her character a little something different.
While the romance is sweet, both characters are carrying significant emotional wounds. Mason is struggling with guilt surrounding his wife’s death, while Gabby has deep trust and abandonment issues because of her relationship with her father. As Mason helps Gabby search for her grandmother, their relationship slowly develops, and both are forced to confront some of the pain they've been carrying.
There are definitely some heavier moments involving loss, grief, and family relationships, but ultimately Falling into Us is a hopeful story about healing, learning to trust again, and finding love when you aren't necessarily looking for it.
If you enjoy clean contemporary romance with family relationships, emotional depth, and characters who have some real-life struggles to work through, Falling into Us is a sweet and heartfelt read.
