Summary
Audiobook Review: Explosive Alliance by Susan Sleeman
Narrated by Whitney Dykhouse
Explosive Alliance is the second book in Susan Sleeman’s First Responders series. Although I hadn’t read the first book, I had no trouble following the story, and it worked very well as a standalone.
One of the things I enjoyed most was the team dynamic. The members of the first responders unit each have distinct personalities and quirks, yet they work together seamlessly. It’s clear that several of these characters are being set up for future books, and after getting to know them, I’m looking forward to seeing each of them get their own story.
If you’ve followed my reviews, you know I’m a longtime fan of Susan Sleeman. She consistently writes engaging romantic suspense, and this book delivered another strong mystery with plenty of twists and suspense. The investigation kept me guessing and was the main reason I couldn’t stop listening.
That said, I struggled to connect with the heroine. Much of the story revolves around the secrets she keeps from Cash, and I found it difficult to fully invest in her character because she continued withholding information even though it seemed inevitable that the truth would eventually come out. While I understood why she made some of her choices, it made it harder for me to connect with her on a personal level.
One character I absolutely loved was her grandfather. He brought warmth, humor, and plenty of personality to the story, and every scene he appeared in was a highlight for me.
Whitney Dykhouse's narration kept the story moving at a good pace and made for an enjoyable listening experience. Combined with Sleeman’s fast-paced writing, the audiobook was easy to stay engaged with from beginning to end.
Overall, while the heroine wasn’t my favorite, the mystery, suspense, and engaging team dynamic more than made up for it. If you enjoy clean romantic suspense with strong investigative elements and recurring teams of characters, Explosive Alliance is well worth the listen.
