Christmas at Sugar Plum Manor by Roseanna White is a Christmas novella that is a heartwarming and delightful read, blending lighthearted romance with deep character development and an uplifting Christian message. Set against the backdrop of Plumford Manor, the story follows Lady Mariah Lyons, the stepdaughter of the Earl of Castleton, as she navigates her love for home, tradition, and her community. However, the return of her childhood friend, Cyril Lightbourne, now her stepfather’s heir, complicates her emotions, especially as she believes he’s pursuing her former nemesis, Lady Pearl.
Mariah's internal struggle between family expectations and her heart’s desires is at the center of the plot, and White masterfully portrays her growth as she learns to embrace her vibrant personality. Cyril, who is equally charmed by Mariah's kindness and imagination, must contend with a rival—a Danish lord determined to win her hand and settle a score with Cyril. At first I thought this was going to be a love triangle which I am not a fan of. However Roseanna has not let me down yet. She once again delivered a beautiful story.
Inspired by The Nutcracker, the novella is filled with charming Christmas traditions, such as picking sugarplums and staging a Christmas play with village children, which add to the festive atmosphere. The secondary characters, like Professor Skylark with his artistic flair, enhance the sense of community and joy.
The story's themes of forgiveness, redemption, and trusting in God are seamlessly woven throughout, leaving a lasting impression. With engaging banter, a sweet romance, and an inspirational message, this novella is the perfect Christmas read to warm your heart and uplift your spirit.
