MTAR: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Rebekah Purdy:
I live in the GREAT state of Michigan (giant mitten on the map). I have 6 kids (LOL—yes you read that right). I spent a few years in the US Army. And I absolutely LOVE to read, write, watch football and soccer, hang out with my kids, go sledding. I also have a mild obsession w/Star Wars.

MTAR: What do you do when you are not writing?
Rebekah Purdy: Working, hanging out with my kidlets, catching up on sleep.

MTAR: How did you choose the genre you write in?
Rebekah Purdy: I’d have to say that I chose to write teen/YA books because I remember falling in love with some of my favorite books/authors/characters as a teen. There’s just something about that age bracket—the ups and downs, the joy of first love, the heartache. It’s like I want to be a part of that journey.

MTAR: What was your favorite chapter (or scene) to write and why?
Rebekah Purdy: One of my favorite scenes to write for The Fairy Godmother Files was probably when Maggie finds out she’s next in line to be the Fairy Godmother. The way she reacts to her grandma and the whole situation was fun. Especially when she’s shoved off the balcony and told to fly!

MTAR: Are there certain characters you would like to go back to, or is there a theme or idea you’d love to work with?
Rebekah Purdy: I’d love to come back to this series. I have two more books planned for it, but I’ll have to see how my schedule goes as I’m contracted with other publishers for books right now. But yeah, I’d love to finish off telling Maggie’s story and letting people see what happens to Seth and the others.

MTAR: What has been the best compliment given to you as an author?
Rebekah Purdy: I think the best compliment I got was from a mom. She’d friended me on facebook then sent me a message that she wanted to thank me for writing one of my books. She has a reluctant reader daughter who hates to reading, but somehow connected to one of my stories. She said her daughter had devoured the book and asked if there were sequels. That meant the world to me.

MTAR: Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?
Rebekah Purdy: DON’T GIVE UP! Seriously. It took me years to get published, land an agent etc. I think it was my 7th or 8th manuscript that finally sold. Also, find yourself a critique group or partner to read your material—it’ll help you catch things you might not normally see.

MTAR: Dogs or cats?
Rebekah Purdy: Can I say both? LOL. Actually, I’ll say dogs because my dog Grrr is awesome and he’s always on my lap, on my shoulder, or snuggling me.

MTAR: What are your current projects?
Rebekah Purdy:
Right now I’m writing book 2 to a series that sold earlier this year. Book 1, currently entitled The Winter People is slated to come out late 2013. It will be undergoing first round edits within the next couple of weeks or so. It’s a little grittier than my other books, but definitely has the same fantastical elements to it. And the characters are awesome.

MTAR: Name one entity that you feel supported you outside of family members.
Rebekah Purdy: Can I say my crit group YAFF (Ya Fiction Fanatics)? Because they are the most supportive ladies (both current members and former members).

MTAR: Do you see writing as a career?
Rebekah Purdy: I’m hoping someday (LOL). Right now, I’ve got a day job (I work for the court system here in Michigan). But I’d love to be able to wake up every day and just write!
