Summary
Three Steps Behind is the third book in Dani Pettrey’s Jeopardy Falls series, and it did not disappoint! I’ve been a huge fan of Dani Pettrey since her very first series and have read every one of her books, so I always look forward to seeing what she has planned for us next.
This installment follows two of the three siblings as they navigate danger, relationships, and the lasting effects of childhood trauma.
First, we have Deckard and Harper and a wonderful friends-to-more romance. Harper is returning home after experiencing a devastating tragedy, and Deck is the person who makes her feel safest. But shortly after arriving, she learns that one of her best friends has died. As Harper and Deck begin looking into what happened, they quickly find themselves pulled into something much bigger than they expected.
Running parallel to their story is Deck’s sister Bristol, a professional con artist who is released from prison to assist the FBI. And her FBI handler? Aubrey, the very agent who spent a year tracking her down before finally catching her and putting her behind bars. Talk about an interesting dynamic! Their storyline had a completely different energy, and I loved it.
Both mysteries kept me engaged, and there were plenty of moments that had me on the edge of my seat. I also appreciated the deeper emotional thread running through the book as the siblings continue dealing with how their childhood experiences have shaped the adults they've become.
One of the things Dani Pettrey does so well is create a group of characters you become invested in beyond just the current mystery. At this point, I don't simply want to know how each case is solved, I want to know what happens to all of these characters.
The worst part? Now I have to wait for the next book! I am completely invested in the Jeopardy Falls series and already counting down until I can find out what happens next.
Content - Dani shares some details that border on disturbing as to what happened to Harper. The opening scene is the worst in my opinion, so if you make it through that you will be fine.
