Summary
As a longtime fan of Barb Han who has enjoyed several of her books, I went into Custody in the Crosshairs expecting another engaging romantic suspense. Unfortunately, this one didn’t connect with me in the same way her other books have.
The story had a promising premise, but I struggled to become invested in the two main characters and their relationship. I never quite felt the chemistry between them, so when their romance progressed very quickly, including a kiss on the first day they met, it felt a little awkward rather than romantic to me. By about halfway through the book, I found myself reading more quickly in hopes that I would connect with the story as it progressed.
There were still elements I enjoyed. Kit, the grandmother, was easily my favorite character and brought some much-needed warmth to the story. I also thought the scenes involving the baby were particularly well done. They felt refreshingly realistic rather than making caring for an infant look effortless. And I have to mention the cover; it definitely caught my attention!
Overall, Custody in the Crosshairs wasn’t one of my favorite Barb Han novels, but that certainly won’t stop me from reading more of her work. If you’re new to Barb Han, I personally wouldn’t recommend starting with this one, as I think some of her other books are a much better introduction to her storytelling.
