Description
In occupied France, a woman becomes a spy for the Resistance and rises to lead the largest intelligence operation in the country in this propulsive new World War II historical novel by bestselling author Roseanna M. White.
Marseille, France, 1941. Zelie Bellerose never fit the mold of an army officer’s wife. She was too passionate in her convictions, too indifferent to societal expectations. After her husband is killed in the war, Zelie focuses on securing a brighter future for her children, hoping to help free her country from the Nazi regime by joining the Resistance. She is soon one of the most trusted operatives in Alliance, and when their leader is imprisoned, she takes command, hiding her identity from all but a few. With enemies closing in, Zelie must earn the trust of her network and prove herself to those who doubt a woman’s place at the helm of France’s largest spy ring.
Marcel Laurent was a renowned concert pianist before joining the French army and being sent to a POW camp. Freed in a prisoner exchange by a wealthy businessman with ties to the Resistance, Marcel agrees to spy for Alliance by conducting a youth orchestra, gathering intelligence from patrons who are loose-lipped Nazi sympathizers. Marcel’s weekly radio broadcasts introducing the orchestra’s performances give him the perfect cover to send coded messages over the airwaves.
As Zelie and Marcel grow closer through their shared love of music, she begins to rely on him. But betrayal from within Alliance puts everything they’ve fought for at risk. When a double agent infiltrates their ranks and the two are captured, their bond faces its greatest test . . . and any misstep could jeopardize not only Alliance but the very outcome of the war.

Summary
Book Review: The Spy Keeper of Marseille by Roseanna M. White
The Spy Keeper of Marseille is another phenomenal novel from Roseanna M. White. By now, I expect exceptional storytelling from her, yet she still manages to exceed my expectations. This story had me completely captivated, and more than once I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering who would survive and who would not.
One of the things I admire most about White's writing is her ability to create remarkable female characters. My first introduction to her work was The Number of Love, and that unforgettable heroine is what sent me searching for every other book she had written. The Spy Keeper of Marseille reminded me why I became such a devoted fan.
Zélie is an extraordinary heroine; a widow, a mother, and a spy who must make impossible decisions. She is courageous without ever feeling invincible, and I found myself deeply invested in her journey.
Marcel was the perfect hero to stand beside her. As a renowned concert pianist, he brings a unique perspective to the story, and I loved how White wove music so naturally into the plot. Readers who appreciate music will especially enjoy the way it becomes part of both the story and the romance. Marcel's quiet strength, unwavering devotion, and the way he loves Zélie are simply beautiful. He's the kind of hero readers can't help but fall in love with.
The combination of gripping suspense, unforgettable characters, heartbreaking choices, and a tender romance makes this one of my favorite Roseanna White novels. Every chapter raised the stakes, and I never felt certain how the story would unfold.
One character I especially hope to see again is Zélie's son. Even at his young age, White gives glimpses of the man he is becoming, and I would absolutely love to read his story someday.
If you enjoy historical fiction filled with espionage, richly developed characters, emotional depth, and a romance that quietly steals your heart, The Spy Keeper of Marseille is one I highly recommend.
Content Notes: Some kissing. As this story is set during World War II, readers should expect wartime violence, including military raids, executions, and scenes involving prisoners of war and POW camps. While these events are handled thoughtfully, they are an important part of the story.
