Summary
Audiobook Review - The Cairo Curse is the second book in Pepper Basham’s delightful Freddie and Grace Mystery series and picks up shortly after Frederick and Grace’s marriage. While this installment leans more heavily into mystery, adventure, and suspense than romance, the love between Freddie and Grace remains at the heart of the story.
One of my favorite things about this series is Grace herself. She is such a delightful character; fun, feisty, intelligent, caring, and full of life. I especially enjoy her constant literary references as she works through clues and theories while trying to solve the mystery. Her love of books adds so much charm and humor to the story.
The dynamic between Grace and Freddie continues to be absolutely adorable. Freddie is the perfect partner for her. He adores Grace completely while also providing the steady, grounding presence she sometimes needs. Their relationship feels genuine and deeply rooted in love and respect, which makes every interaction between them a joy to read.
Although this book focuses more on the mystery than the romance, there are still plenty of swoon-worthy moments because Freddie and Grace care for each other so deeply. Their marriage feels authentic, supportive, and full of affection. Grace’s humor also shines throughout the story, and several scenes had me smiling.
As with all of Pepper Basham’s books that I’ve read so far, the Christian themes are woven naturally into the story and add depth without ever feeling forced.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Cairo Curse, though I have to admit that The Mistletoe Countess remains my favorite of the series. The romance in book one completely stole my heart and is the kind of story I can easily see myself rereading just for Freddie and Grace’s relationship.
That said, The Cairo Curse was a wonderful continuation of their story, and I loved the ending. In fact, I’ve already downloaded book three because I’m not ready to leave Freddie and Grace behind just yet!
I’ve mentioned before that I’m relatively new to Pepper Basham’s writing, but binge-listening to this series has been such a treat. I was fortunate to find the audiobooks through my library, and they have been wonderful companions.
Recommended for readers who enjoy: historical mysteries, newlywed romance, adventure, witty heroines, and faith-filled stories with memorable characters. 📚❤️🕵️♀️
Content Notes: Closed-door romance between a married couple with some innuendo and mildly suggestive moments. Moderate suspense and some violence.
