Zezilia has known all her life that she is a disappointment to her family. Being the seventh born child after six brothers, she too should have men a male. Being a seventh son would have restored the family honor. Because she was female, he dad all but ignored her from birth, unless of course, he was telling her what a disappointment she is. Just before she is to be presented at court, Zezilia discovers she is gifted, or talented as those with the gift are called. She is excited to learn that she is talented, but she fears her father will never agree for her to be trained. After all, she was supposed to be a male.
This fantasy book is refreshing! It is complex enough to add interest, but not so complex that it’s hard to understand. I enjoyed the frequent shifts between the two main characters, Zez and Ilias. It kept the plot moving forward at a good pace. Though it is obvious there is a sequel, I didn’t feel like the author left me hanging at the end of this book. There is violence in the book, but no foul language and no sex scenes. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys clean fantasy.
