Summery::
In the beginning, The Quiet Game takes an interesting pose, and even fiddles with the moral matters of racism in an engaging point of view. But Greg Iles seems to be satisfied with only fiddling with these issues instead of actually addressing them. And after that, this potentially moving story declines into a motionless 624-page mass of predictability.
This, along with its unhealthy overdose of foul language and strong sexuality make The Quiet Game a book to stay far, far away from.
Sexual Content::
Penn and Livy have sex—or begin to have sex—three times. All of them consist of explicit foreplay and nudity before they are either interrupted, stopped, or the author ends the scene.
For their first interview, Caitlin wears a blouse with nothing underneath, and it seems to be a constant distraction for Penn (we later learn that it was intended to be). This is crudely commented on later. As their relationship grows, so does the sexual tension between them. And we hear that they eventually sleep together on a consistent basis.
There are two unsettling conversations of rape (and a brief comment about someone’s father raping them). Another, younger girl says she was raped as well, and there’s a mental discussion about adolescent sexuality and lust. A man is said to go to a topless bar.
Couples kiss passionately, and, at one point, the man’s sexual feelings are described. There are multiple obscene sexual comments. An unsettling sequence features a street thug talking about how he would love to have sex with Caitlin (albeit, more crudely stated), and Caitlin responds in equal crudeness. The man makes a sexual gesture with his tongue and talks about oral sex. It’s suggested that an old man and his nurse are lovers, and there’s a few conversations surrounding Ray Presley, who apparently forced many of his female victims to perform sex acts on him (this is not described, only discussed or mentioned).
The number of homosexuals populating Natchez is mentioned a few times. Women are described in occasionally revealing outfits and men ogle them.
Violent Content::
There’s talk of murders and kidnappings, some done out of racism. Three brothers are said to have beeb murdered, as well as an entire innocent black family. The KkK is also brought up and their crimes are touched on in conversation. However, one man is said to have been inside a car when it exploded, and the springs shot up into his thighs, penning him there. Another two people are said to be beaten to death.
A street brawl features some brutal beatings and blood. There’s some gunfire and explosions. A house fire kills someone and a small boy is briefly described to be mauled by a dog. There’s also some talk of abuse.
Language::
Around 50 f-words (a good portion of them paired with “mother” and at least one in a sexual context). The s-word is uttered about four dozen times. There’s about two dozen n-words, the c-word is used at least once, and b--ch is said multiple times. D--n, h--l, and a-- are peppered throughout the book. A few uses of b--tard, t-t, c--k, and of d--k (once used as a sexual verb). The Lord’s name is used in vain and God’s name is said with and without d--n in several moments.

People drink and smoke. There are multiple drug references.
