Book Title: The House of Silk
Book Author: Anthony Horowitz
What do you like about this book:
Summery::
Although well paced and brilliantly written, The House of Silk proves an unsettling and disturbing read. Throughout the book, you are led to believe that Horowitz has discovered something new in one of the world's move famous detectives, something fun and intriguing--and he does, up until the last pages. This is where all excitement fades into pure disgust and darkness. Even Guy Ritchie, with his impulsive, quirky yet fun version of the detective is truer to Doyle's stories than this. This--no matter how you look at it--is not how Sherlock Holmes mysteries should be.
Sexual Content:: [SPOILER]
The House of Silk is a place where prominent men would rape young boys and girls. Although it is never overtly said, it is still disturbingly obvious.
Violent Content::
At the scene of a crime, a young child is described, having had every bone in his body smashed and his throat slit; another one has the victim depicted with a knife in the side of his neck, blood everywhere; and a third scene has a another young child shot three times. Watson's military backstory is shared where he is wounded--but the retelling is completely bloodless. Multiple men are said to have been shot, others to have been killed in an explosion; one is said to be beaten to death. A woman is said to commit suicide by gas fumes. At an orphanage, misbehaving boys are said to be flogged.
Language::
Three cultural uses of the n-word, eight uses of "d--n," and on of "h-ll." A few abuses of God's name.
Drug/Alcohol Content::
With Sherlock Holmes, there's going to be a lot of smoking and drinking, some drunkenness, and, of course, there's Holmes's drug issues to account for, including other drug references. Opium is addressed frequently.
Recommendation:: 1.5/5
