Peter Brown joined His Majesty’s Army in the fight against Napoleon, but when he was wounded, a lovely French woman tended him. She was a recent widow, and they were on opposing sides of the war, so they went their separate ways. But he never forgot his “bel ange” — his beautiful angel.
Caroline Bouchard Duval marched with her husband in Napoleon’s army, eager to leave her sleepy village and see the world. But after being widowed, she returned to her childhood home in the French Alps. When a bloody traveler enters her father’s inn, she recognizes him immediately. Could this man give her another chance to fulfill her dreams?

Summary
In order to deal with an impediment to an unexpected inheritance, Peter Brown travels through France under the name Pierre leBrun to avoid any conflicts over his nationality. Trust becomes essential when he comes across a woman he'd met during the war.
What I like about this novella is that these characters aren't nobility. They are ones who have had to work to provide for themselves and their families. They are relatable and easy to identify with, especially Caroline who wishes for something more out of life.
This is a short read. While I would have like more time for the relationship between Peter/Pierre and Caroline, it's paced well enough. There isn't always a clear definition of how much time has passed, which can create confusion at times.
I recommend this to anyone looking for a quick, sweet read.
