At the age of 23, James Frey woke up on a plane to find his front teeth knocked out and his nose broken. He had no idea where the plane was headed nor any recollection of the past two weeks. An alcoholic for ten years and a crack addict for three, he checked into a treatment facility shortly after landing. There he was told he could either stop using or die before he reached age 24. This is Frey’s acclaimed account of his six weeks in rehab.

Summary
Review by Blake: Overall If you have a weak stomach or are not one for the grit of reality, this may not be a book for you. While I typically do enjoy reading upbeat, happy books, I found this true story riveting, totally enthralling. I have never been exposed to the life of an addict and have been totally unaware of what a person with an addictive disease lives with on a day-to-day basis. You will not believe the depths a human being will put themselves through...nor the pain they will cause their loved ones to suffer. I do not wish this on anyone, but it was very, very enlightening to come to understand these circumstances through the eyes of someone who has lived it personally.
Violence There are violent acts described and disturbing imagery included. None of it unnecessarily included, all are to tell the true story.
Language There is crude language as well as references in this book.
Sexual While not a major focus of the book, there are sexual acts described.
Drug & Alcohol This IS the theme of this book.
