When Framboise Simon returns to a small village on the banks of the Loire, the locals do not recognize her as the daughter of the infamous woman they hold responsible for a tragedy during the German occupation years ago. But the past and present are inextricably entwined, particularly in a scrapbook of recipes and memories that Framboise has inherited from her mother. And soon Framboise will realize that the journal also contains the key to the tragedy that indelibly marked that summer of her ninth year. . . .

Summary
Overall Life in France during the German occupation must have been so difficult for young children to understand. This book adds a dimension to the war that is heartbreaking. When German soldiers were nice to the young children they become collaborators. The children really lacked the basicsfood! and were easily influenced by treats. But the story isn't just about the Germans. This is also a story about a very complicated mother/daughter relationship. If you have ever had trouble with your mother this might help by comparing her to this mother! Lots of anger here. Being a baker myself I enjoyed all the parts with descriptions of food and recipes in this book.
