With no money or options, both become indentured servants in exchange for safe passage to Philadelphia. Summary
Life as the daughter of a professing Huguenot in 1745 Versailles, France has become increasingly dangerous. The beautiful, aristocratic Suzanne Richelieu is forced to flee when her father's religious allegiance is discovered and her own engagement hopes are dashed. Further tragedy strikes when Suzanne loses her dear mother, added to the fact that her brother's future in the French military is in jeopardy as well. Years earlier, they had designed a plan for this scenario, but Suzanne could never have imagined how far away from health and home, her banishment would eventually carry her.
Johan Rousch's offer of safe sanctuary for the young French woman, supposedly a peasant, within his German family is quickly tested. Once Suzanne's location is compromised and her identity revealed, Johan is forced to make an excruciating decision in order to preserve his dreams and protect the woman that he is growing to love. Can the marquise's granddaughter even survive the trip to America, where seemingly insurmountable challenges await them? Will she ever be the same?
Carrie Fancett Pagels has designed a story steeped in rich history and lovely romance, while serving as a reminder of how precious our religious freedoms truly are, even today.
