Summary
With a movie and a television series by the same name now being on the market, I went back and reread one of my favorite Janette Oke series--When Calls the Heart being the first in the series. One of the things I enjoyed most about this book is contemplating what it would have been like for a young woman to leave the comforts of her \"civilized\" world to venture into the wilds of the Alberta area of Canada when it was just beginning to be settled. And then to overlay that story with what it was like to teach in a one room school, in which most of the students had never stepped foot into a school, is further interesting. The icing on the cake is to just begin considering what the life of the early Royal Canadian Mounties was like. It is a tender romance--the romance of growing up and stretching one's wings, the romance of settling the western Canadian frontier, and a perfect amount of romance in a love story. Will they live happily ever after? You will have to read the next book in the series!
