Tessa Taylor arrives in 1870s Upper Peninsula, Michigan, planning to serve as a new teacher to the town. Much to her dismay, however, she immediately learns that there was a mistake, that the town had requested a male teacher. Percival Updegraff, superintendent and chief mine clerk, says she can stay through winter since they won’t be able to locate a new teacher before then, and Tessa can’t help but say she is in his debt. Little does she know that Percival will indeed keep track of all that she owes him.
Determined to become indispensable, Tessa throws herself into teaching, and soon the children of the widowed lighthouse keeper have decided she’s the right match for their grieving father. Their uncle and assistant light keeper, Alex Bjorklund, has his own feelings for Tessa. As the two brothers begin competing for her hand, Tessa increasingly feels that someone is tracking her every move, and she may not be able to escape the trap that has been laid for her.

Summary
Tessa Taylor vowed that she would never participate in light-keeping again; having lost her mother, father and sibling to the angry waters of a Michigan lake where her father maintained his occupation as a resident light keeper. Imagine her complete surprise and subsequent regret when the handsome Alex Bjorklund turns out to be the assistant keeper of the Eagle Harbor, Michigan lighthouse. Tessa has fled to the isolated upper Michigan peninsula in order to escape her tainted reputation; eagerly accepting the opportunity to be the new school teacher in the remote copper mining town. Unfortunately, it appears that she needs a rescuer even there, when Tessa is forced to deflect unwanted advances from the town's cruel mine superintendent, Percival Updegraff. Alex always seems to be in the right place at the right time, much to Updegraff's obvious disgust. But after Tessa begins her teaching responsibilities, it is Alex's young niece and nephew that capture Tessa's heart, with their cheerful childish antics and unconditional acceptance, further complicated by the fact that their widowed father, Alex's brother, becomes quite attracted to the lovely new teacher. Hopes of a new beginning start to wane; both Alex and his brother Michael seem determined to selfishly feud over Tessa's devotion, compounded by fact that Percival Updegraff's devious methods of maintaining control of \"his\" town become increasingly murderous. Following a terrible misfortune, Tessa reluctantly battles her fear of lighthouses and searches for the courage to embrace God's plan for the future; if only the right brother could be a part of it. This third book in Jody Hedlund's \"Beacon of Hope\" series is a resplendent reminder of God's unfailing love and a beacon of hope for anyone battling paralyzing fears; the author's well researched historical aura of Michigan lighthouses providing the perfect backdrop for \"Undaunted Hope\". It was my privilege to receive a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion.
