When fashion reporter Lacey Smithsonian moved to Washington, D.C., from rugged, small town Sagebrush, Colorado, she thought she’d never look back. But when her former boyfriend, cattle rancher Cole Tucker, is arrested for the murders of three women, Lacey digs her cowboy boots out of her closet and hops on the next plane.
She is certain of Tucker’s innocence, until he abducts her during a daring courthouse escape. Is Tucker capable of murder, too? Or is there a larger conspiracy in the small town? Lacey needs to rustle up all the help she can get for this case before her old flame is snuffed out for good…

Summary
Ellen Byerrum's Crime of Fashion mysteries feature Lacey Smithsonian, a journalist who wants to get off the fashion beat and into serious news and yet her \"Fashion
Bites\" columns, interspersed into the novels at strategic points, combine style, practical advice, and some deep observations about society. Lacey also sees the clues the less fashionsavvy detectives around her miss. In this installment of the series, for example, Lacey is back in Sagebrush, Colorado, where women are being murdered... and their bootheels tell a story. Unfortunately, the story seems to be about an old flame of Lacey's becoming a murderer of a particularly loathsome kind. Lacey can't quite
believe it. When he abducts her in a jailbreak, she begins to wonder. The story is complicated by relationships: Lacey's current boyfriend, her former boyfriend, her
former boss, her mother, her sister, her current boss, old and current friends, and more. All these voices from the past (and the present) complicate Lacey's feelings as well as the story. There's plenty of action and suspense, and the plot contains as many twists and turns as the patterns on a fancy pair of cowboy boots. Add local color, colorful characters, and some great tips on how to wear boots and Western fashion, and you've got a fun read.
