Summary
Sweet Boundless by Kristen Heitzmann picks up right where the first novel in the Diamond of the Rockies trilogy left off. Quillan Shepard has married Carina DiGratia as a means to protect her and save her from a forced marriage to a cheating scoundrel. But the fact is, he loves her, and she him. However,
he spends most of the novel running away from his feelings, leaving Carina for long stretches of time as he works his freighting business. He hears in his mind his adoptive mother's litany of how he's worthless and the no good son of a savage and a harlot. He is wrestling with bitterness over the death of his friend and father¬figure, a death he feels responsible for. He is angry at God. While the reader was introduced to the Rose Legacy in the last novel, it is this novel that uncovers the mystery surrounding Quillan's parents, Rose and Wolf. Ms. Heitzmann is skilled at weaving a complex and moving plot line that the reader will find difficult to stop thinking about. Themes in this novel deal with shame, letting fear dictate choices, insecurities, grace, forgiveness, perseverance, and loss. In the first novel, Rose provided the poetry and deep thoughts that introduce each chapter. In Sweet Boundless, Carina is the one whose journaled thoughts provide introduction to the chapters. Don't skip over them! They add a deeper understanding to Carina and the story. The reader will be glad to know that there is more to Quillan and Carina Shepard's story in the final novel of the trilogy.
