Handsome Calvin Seton, recently wounded in battle, travels from England to America to find the illegitimate granddaughter of a Duke. Himself the son of an Earl, Seton is put off by the crass behavior of the girl when he finds her.
Dorothy Paxton, the girl in question, is an innkeeper, having risen with her half brother from a life of penury to the comparative comfort of owning a modest inn. She is self confident and determined not to find herself in the kind of trouble her mother got into.
When Dorothy Paxton meets Calvin Seton, though, she is overcome by her reaction to him. She agrees — in exchange for medical care for her brother — not only to return to England in Seton’s care, but also to learn to be a lady during the voyage.
If your idea of a good romance novel includes historical accuracy, tight plotting, witty dialogue, and surprising plot twists, you should skip this one. However, if you can uncritically enjoy a nice little love story with likable characters, you can certainly enjoy this pleasant book.
